Biography Maria Milstein
Acclaimed by international critics, Franco-Russian violinist Maria Milstein is a prizewinner at major international competitions such as "Città di Brescia" and "Premio Rodolfo Lipizer" in Italy, the ARD Munich Competition, the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition and the Kersjes Prize in the Netherlands. In 2016, Maria was awarded a grant from the prestigious Borletti Buitoni Trust, and in 2018, she received the "Dutch Music Prize" - the highest recognition for a classical musician in the Netherlands, awarded by the Ministry of Culture.
Maria performs in venues such as Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Brussels' BOZAR, Vienna's Musikverein, Cologne's Philharmonie and Paris' Cité de la Musique, and is a guest at festivals such as La Roque d'Anthéron, the Festival International de Colmar, La Folle Journée de Nantes, and the Festival de la Grange de Meslay. Maria appears as soloist with the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Belgique, the Residentie Orchestra de La Haye, the Essen Philharmonic and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, among others, and with conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, Otto Tausk, Michel Tabachnik, Tomas Netopil, Jean-Jacques Kantorow, Duncan Ward and Reinbert de Leeuw.
Passionate about chamber music, Maria forms the Van Baerle Trio with pianist Hannes Minnaar and cellist Gideon den Herder. Winners of the ARD Munich Competition and the Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon, then selected for the ECHO Rising Stars Tour in 2014, the Trio performs in Europe's major concert halls, and has just released the complete Beethoven trio works for Challenge Records - a recording that has been very favorably received by the international press.
Maria's first album "Sounds of War" with Sonatas by Poulenc, Janáček and Prokofiev, received an Edison Klassiek 2015 in the "best chamber music album" category. In 2017, her second album "La Sonate de Vinteuil", recorded with her pianist sister Nathalia Milstein, was released on the French Mirare label and voted "best CD of 2017" by the Dutch press. Maria and Nathalia's second album for Mirare, "Ravel Voyageur", released in 2019, is hailed by the international press and awarded the prestigious Diapason d'Or.
Together with violinist Mathieu van Bellen, pianist Omri Epstein and cellist Ori Epstein, Maria founded MuziekHaven, a chamber music center located in a 17th-century church in Zaandam (Netherlands) - a venue offering residencies for chamber music ensembles, educational projects and a recording studio with exceptional acoustics.
Born into a family of musicians, Maria Milstein studied in Amsterdam with Ilya Grubert, in London with David Takeno and at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Waterloo (Belgium) with Augustin Dumay.
Maria plays a violin by Michel Angelo Bergonzi (Cremona, circa 1750), on loan from the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation, and teaches at the Amsterdam Conservatory.
